| | HISTORY: The Mastiff or the Old English Mastiff, a giant short haired dog has been bred in England for more than two thousand years. When Ceasar invaded Britain in 55 B.C., these dogs fought against and left such an impression that after the invasion, several accounts have been found of the huge British fighting dogs that were brought back to Rome,The Romans used these dogs in the arenas of Rome, they were matched against, other breeds of dogs, human gladiators, bulls, bears, lions and tigers. Until Dog fighting bull baiting and bear baiting were outlawed in England and America the Mastiff were highly prized for these cruel sports.
DESCRIPTION: Standing 71-84cms. (28-33ins) at withers weigh 68-95 kgs. The Mastiff is one of the largest breed of dogs. He has smooth coat. His colours are fawn, silver and dark fawn brindle. The muzzle and the floppy ears, are black. He is large, massive symmetrical and well knit, he gives an impression of grandeur and good nature, courage and docility.
CHARACTER: Inspite of his history the Mastiff is friendly, family dog, very gentle with children. He is slow moving and tolerant. An excellent guard dog.
SPACE & EXERCISE: He needs daily walks as he tends to put on weight. He is not a dog for small houses and flats.
ATTENTION REQUIRED: A light brushing daily.
