Generally, emu chicks weigh about 370 to 450 gms. After hatching chicks are kept in the hatcher for 24 hours and then transferred to a nursery unit. For the first 3 days after hatch the chicks are kept at 30 degrees centigrade under the mock hen and the surrounding temperature should be 26degrees centigrade. At the end of the 1st week the temperature ws reduced to 28 degreeds and 24degrees centigrade. resoectuvekt, The temperature was further reduced by2 degrees C every subsequent week. Proper temperture is essential for successful brooding. One foot candle light ( 40 watt bulb for every 100sft area) is provided for 24 hours for first three days. On 4th and 5th day the light may be reduced to 18 hours and on 6th and 7th day it may be reduced to 16 hours .. From beginning of 2nd week the outside temperature should be atleaset 15 degrees centigrade. A chick guard should be 2.5 feet height to avoid jumping and straying of hicks. After 3 weks of age, slowly extend the brooder area by widening the chick guard circle and later remove it when hicks attain 6 weeks age. Sufficient water mugs and equal number of feeder troughs are provided under the brooder. Feed starter mash should be supplied for the first 14 weeks. 30 ft run spce is required: hence 40ftx30ft floor space is required for bout 40 chicks. Floor must be easily drained and free from any dampness. Periodical body weights on 10%of birds should be taken for correction of management defects.
