| HISTORY: The exact origin of the Collie is lost is Scottish lore, and it has been known to have existed in Scottland and Northern England- for many centuries. The name comes from the word "Col" meaning black. Until the nineteenth century most of the Scottish Sheep were black and were known as "Cols" and the dog used for working these "Cols" was named Collie. The Hollywood film of forties "Lassie come Home" made the Rough Collie very popular. DESCRIPTION: There are two varieties of Collie, the rough and the smooth. The Rough Collei's coat is abundant except jon the head and legs, being longer on the mane and frills. The Smooth Collie has a short coat. They come in four recognised colours, "Sable and White". The white is predominantly white, with sable, tri-colour or blue-merle marking. The Collie stands 56-66 cms.(22-26 ins) at withers. They have Perky, sharp ears that are noted for their reaction to sound and movement, a strong straight muzzle and a strong but delicate body. CHARACTER: They are extremely intelligent and make good family dogs, they dont like to be left on their own for long periods. The Collie respond well to training and make good guard dogs. SPACE & EXERCISE: The collie need a lot of exercise and should either have lot of space to exercise themselves or they must be taken out for long walks.
