| HISTORY: He is native of Zimbabwe. He was developed by crossing the south African native hattentot dog and the bloodhound. The Ridgeback was also known as the 'African Lion Hound' The early European settlers in South Africa needed dogs that could flush birds, pull down a wounded buck, guard their farm from maraurding animals or human prowlers at night. The dog had to have a physique that could withstand the harsh African Brush, drastic changes in temperature from heat of the day to nights below freezing. They needed a dog that was a companion while they worked in the bush and was devoted to their family Out of necessity the Boer farmers developed by selective breeding the Ridgeback.
DESCRIPTION: The name Ridgeback comes from the peculiarity of the breed that of " ridge" on the back, this ridge is formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction of the coat. He stands 53-63 en (21-27ins) at the withers. He is short haired and comes in light wheaten to red wheaten colours, with a little white on the chest and toes permitted.
