| HISTORY: The Bullmastiff was developed in the later part of the nineteenth century in England. The Bullmastiff was primarily developed by the Game keepers of large estates and Game preserves as they found it difficult to stop poaching. They decided to enlist the aid of the greatest protector nature has given to man-the dog. They desired a dog, silent at the approach of the poachers, attack only on command. Their intention was that the poachers be thrown and held but not mauled, they crossed the Mastiff and the Bulldog and succeeded in producing such a dog. The Bullmastiff was also known as the " Game keepers " Night-Dog."
DESCRIPTION: He is a symmetrical animal, showing great strength, powerfully built and active. He has short-hair, floppy ears and a square head. His colours are red, fawn or brindle, with only a white marking on the chest allowed. The Bull-mastiff stands 61-68 cms. (24-27ins) at withers weighing 31-59kgs.
CHARACTER: Inspite of his history, the Bullmastiff is a loveable, friendly and playful dog. As he is big and powerful he cannot be considered as companion for small children.]
SPACE & EXERCISE: The Bullmastiff has tendency to put on excessive weight therefore he needs hard exercise daily. He needs all the room he can get, a small house or a flat is not for him.
ATTENTION REQUIRED: A light brushing is all that is needed. |
