| HISTORY: The poodle is supposed to have originated in Germany, where it is knownas the Pudel, but he has been regarded as the national dog of France. In France he is known as "Caniche" or duck dog. The poodle undoubtedly originated as a water retriever. The present custom of clipping the coat to pattern which enhances the style and general appearance of the dog, comes from the time when as a retriever portions of his coat were shorn to facilitate in swimming.
DESCRIPTION: There are three accepted varieties of poodle. The Standard Poodle-43cm (17ins) at withers. The Miniature Poodle-28-38 cm (11-15ins) and Toy poodle -25cm(10ins or less) at withers. The poodles have a thick furry coat which is usually trimmed in a number of fashions.
The poodle comes in variety of colours blues, greys, silvers, browns, cafeau-laits, apricots and creams, the coat may show varying shades of the same colour.
CHARACTER: Poodles are intelligent and make good family pets. They are inclined to be yappy.
SPACE AND EXERCISE: Poodle requires little exercise. All the three varieties can be kept in small houses or flats.
ATTENTION REQUIRED: His coat requires daily attention. It must be brushed and combed daily. Trimming needs professional help twice a year. |
